MUMBAI: Two men who came on a bike threatened an employee of a jewellery shop with a knife, hurled chilli powder on his face and snatched his bag with gold worth Rs 55 lakh at VP Road, the police said. The employee was on his way to deliver the gold to his employer's jewellery shop on Friday morning. The bike was later found abandoned in south Mumbai. A case of robbery has been registered at V P Road police station.

An officer said, "The 35-year-old employee had collected the gold from the employer's office and was going to deliver it to the jewellery shop. He was walking on the road in Bhuleshwar when the incident took place around 7.30 am. The accused pulled out a knife and threatened him. One of them flung chilli powder on him and snatched his bag. We scanned the CCTV footage and found the two in various areas of south Mumbai. Later, they abandoned the bike and fled."

The police suspect that a stolen bike was used in the crime. "We have recovered the bike," said an officer, adding that there could be three to four people involved in the crime.

The employee has been working with the jeweller for over five years, said police. The police said they are trying to get leads in the case. A team from the crime branch also visited the police station to get some information about the crime to start a parallel probe, according to a police officer.
