Mumbai: 2 members of a family killed, 2 hurt in Worli chawl fire

MUMBAI: Two women were reported dead on Wednesday after they were injured along with two others when a fire broke out in their home in a chawl in Worli. The fire erupted at Mariam Mansion Chawl on Ganpatrao Kadam Marg in Worli around 3 am on Monday, officials said.

"Four persons - Lakshmi Rathod (50), Dhiraj Rathod (41), Teja Kala Rathod (71) and Madhu Teja Rathod (38) - were injured. They were rushed to the civic-run Kasturba Hospital where Lakshmi Rathod died on Tuesday morning. Later Madhu was moved to the Nair Hospital where she died on Tuesday. Dhiraj and Teja are reported to be stable," said an official.

Fire officials said that the fire was likely caused by a short circuit in the AC unit room on the second floor of the ground plus two-storey structure. "The unit was located next to the A to Z Industrial Estate in Worli. The exact cause of the fire is not yet known but it could possibly be a short circuit. The fire was not big but since it was an electric fire, it may have led to inhalation of thick smoke. Since it was the early hours of the morning, the family may have slept, giving them less time to escape," said an official.

The fire was designated as a level 1 fire.

Officials said that all four belonged to the same familyFire officials said that an investigation was being carried out and notices would be sent to the owners of the AC units if fire norms were violated.
