Mum woken by son's cries as he told her 'I'm dying' after being hit by van

A mum woke up to the cries of her son after he was hit by a van on the way to a friend's house.

Yesterday evening Rachel Wilson, 42, from Knowsley, was woken up by a phone call from her son Marc as he lay on the road miles from their home. Marc, 23, had been walking to a friend's house at around 5pm when a white Ford Transit van hit him from behind, throwing him into the air before he landed on the van's windscreen.

The van then sped off, leaving behind a wingmirror Marc's falling body had broken off. Rachel had gone to bed early due to pain relating to medical conditions she suffers from, but said she "threw her boots on and ran out the house" to find her son.

She told the ECHO: " I got woken up by the phone, with my son crying and thinking he was dying. He was like 'I’m dying, a van’s hit me.'

"I was still half asleep and I just threw my boots on and ran out the house. I didn’t know what I had on my feet I just threw something on and ran out.

"He had heard the van coming up and he made sure to have his phone light on. He obviously didn’t expect it to hit him when he’s visible, very visible.

"He’s a bag of bones, there’s nothing to him. If he was to jump onto my wind mirror now it wouldn’t even move he’s that light. He’s tall, but he’s just skin and bones.

"So it’s hit him on the passenger side and it’s thrown him up in the air."

Marc then landed on the van's windscreen, and then fell onto some roadside bushes. As he did so, the white van fled the scene.

She said Marc had to agonisingly drag himself off the "prickly" bushes and back across the road to reach a point of safety. She said he was left in "agony" from his injuries and "soaked right through" as it had been pouring down with rain.

She added: " Any one coming either way wouldve seen him, he had his phone light on and he was outside a house that was all lit up.

"The fact that 20-odd cars then maneuvered past him while he lay on the road shows you could see him. He was in the middle of the road and at least 20 cars have drove around him.

"What is wrong with people? I really dont get it, that’s what so hurtful.

" They were probably mothers and fathers coming home from work. I’m just so hurt and angry that they just left him lying there in the road and drove past him."

Marc is now at home recovering after being rescued by Rachel, who said her son couldn't even get out of the car once they'd returned home. He was carried into the home with the help of a rapid response paramedic, who had concerns for Marc's spine and neck.

Merseyside police have now opened an investigation into the incident

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We are appealing for information following a fail to stop [after a] road traffic collision Foxes Bank Lane near to Prescot Road in Cronton.
