Mum with terminal cancer joins pals at Santa Dash to raise funds for the Beatson

A group of mums took part in yesterday’s Santa Dash to support a friend who is fighting the same cancer her brother overcame.

A couple of days ago, mum-of-two Denise Lovell was told by doctors nothing more could be done to treat her disease.

But the 47-year-old, from Alexandria in Dunbartonshire, still joined 8000 others on the rain-lashed start line for the annual festive fundraiser in Glasgow .

Denise and her family and friends were raising cash for the Beatson Cancer Centre.

They were also seeking to bring in money for a crowdfunding page set up by Denise’s sister Ellie Penny to pay for private treatment.

Ellie, 45, said: “If I could have one wish for a Christmas miracle, it would be to cure my amazing sister.

“Two years ago, she found a lump in her neck and was diagnosed with oropharangeal squamous cell cancer – just as our brother, Gerard Cannon, finished treatment for the same cancer.

“We were told it was very treatable but despite undergoing gruelling bouts of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and pioneering robotic surgery by one of the world’s top surgeons, Denise has been told there are tumours in each side of her neck and throat.

“The doctors might have given up hope but we never will. We need a miracle but we are all keeping positive that she can have alternative treatment. Denise is an inspiration. She never complains and still keeps a smile on her face. I’d do anything for her.”

After the dash, Denise said: “To take part in this with family, friends, and especially with my son Harrison, 10, by my side, was amazing.

“I’ve been overwhelmed with the support, determination and love coming my way.”
