Mum who repeatedly punched woman and stole her phone in Glasgow city centre avoids jail

A mum who repeatedly punched a woman and robbed her of a phone has avoided jail.

Nadia Crighton pounced on Rachel Gibson in Glasgow city centre's Hope Street on October 11, 2018.

The 33-year-old struck after she was warned by the victim about her manners.

Crighton punched Miss Green on separate occasions and fled the scene with her iPhone.

Crighton pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assault and robbery.

The court heard Crighton's former co-accused and father of her one-year-old child - James Cummings - is "deceased."

Prosecutor Gemma Barclay told the hearing that Miss Gibson and a friend had been out in the city centre but their phones had died before 1am.

A good Samaritan offered to call them a taxi and waited until it arrived.

Crighton arrived on the scene meantime and shouted: "Get us a taxi."

Miss Gibson replied: "Do you have no manners?"

Miss Barclay added: "Crighton punched several times on the head which caused her to fall to the ground.

"Crighton then grabbed Miss Gibson's phone from her hand and began walking away.

"Miss Gibson approached Crighton to retrieve her iPhone and was pleading with her to return it to her.

"Crighton again began punching Miss Gibson and walked away out of sight."

The three people who were "clearly shaken and upset" went to a nearby pub and an ambulance was called.

Miss Crighton was taken to hospital for minor bleeding and bruising.

Kieran Dean, defending, told the court Crighton is "disgusted and ashamed" about her conduct.

The lawyer added: "She stays with her mother once a week as the murder was close to where she lived and she is fearful of the area that she is in."

Sheriff Charles Lugton put Crighton, of Ayrshire, on a structured deferred sentence with the first review taking place in February.

He said: "This was clearly an unpleasant incident and had a real impact on the victim.

"I take into account you have a relatively speaking little criminal record and that this happened in 2018 and you have been out of trouble since then.

"I am taking a more lenient approach that what I would have done."
