Mum who 'never liked New Year' welcomes gorgeous son on first day of 2021

A mum who says she has never liked New Year's welcomed a gorgeous baby boy on the first day of 2021.

Ryan Steven McDermott was born in the early hours of Friday, January 1 at a healthy weight of 10lb 11oz at Liverpool Women's Hospital.

And he was the perfect reason for mum Catherine, dad Scott and big sister Ava to celebrate the new year.

Speaking to the ECHO about her new bundle of joy, Catherine has said that Ryan has brought the family the "most perfect start" to the year.

The 29-year-old, from Seaforth, said: "We are so thrilled with him and it is just such a lovely way to start 2021.

"Last year was so rubbish for everyone that having Ryan today makes me feel like this year will definitely be better."

And nine-year-old Ava has already stepped up into the role of loving big sister.

Catherine added: "We got home about 12pm today, after I had him at 3.19am and Ava is over the moon with him.

"She keeps checking on him and loves holding him. We are really looking forward to beginning life as a family of four."

Ryan's birth has also given the family the best reason to celebrate New Year from now on after Catherine admitted she never really enjoyed the occasion.

She said: "While we were in the hospital on New Year's Eve, we were saying how I never really liked it.

"I didn't like going out and it didn't appeal to me, so now we will have something to celebrate each year - Ryan."

Catherine and husband Scott, who have been married since 2017, were worried that he wouldn't be able to stay with her throughout the induction process on Thursday due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

During her pregnancy, Catherine had to attended scans and hospital appointments alone, in line with infection rules at the hospital.

But the couple were allowed to experience the whole occasion together and said it was something they will never forget.

Catherine added: "I was induced at 5.30pm on New Year's Eve and about midnight we started to get ready to have a sleep because nothing was happening.

"Scott was allowed to stay with me the whole time.

"At about 1am my waters broke and Ryan was here by just after 3am, it all happened very fast in the end.

"We expected him to be big but nobody was expecting him to be 10lb 11oz.

"But he is healthy and we're all so happy, and that is all that matters."
