Mum who lost her leg after Aldi crash saved lives on covid ward

Nurses who work with a mum who lost her leg after a horror crash where she bravely threw her baby to safety have spoken of her strength, bravery and incredible dedication to helping others.

Ruby Flanagan, 24, from Wallasey, sustained the life-changing injuries after a trip to Aldi in Bidston Moss on Monday.

She was carrying her five-month-old baby over a zebra crossing towards Aldi when she was involved in a crash which saw her crushed between a silver Mercedes and a blue Volkswagen.

When she realised what was about to happen, Ruby, a nurse at Arrowe Park Hospital, threw her baby out of harm's way,

Ruby was airlifted to Aintree Hospital after the crash and had to have her right leg amputated and the another put into a stabilising cage.

Her colleagues on Ward 14 at Arrowe Park spoke to the ECHO today of Ruby's "heart of gold" and the work she did while pregnant on a covid ward in the hospital.

A colleague, who asked not to be named, said: "Ruby has a heart of gold, she gets on with everybody.

"She's an incredible nurse who often went above and beyond for her patients."

This included working on a covid ward while pregnant at the height of the pandemic.

The colleague said: "From all the girls on the ward, we were all just absolutely devastated and heartbroken for the three of them and just in shock.

"She's just beautiful inside and out, we're just gutted for her."

Nurses on the ward have been putting together a raffle to raise funds for the GoFundMe for Ruby, which raised over £60,000 in just three days, with details due to be released on Facebook soon.

Ruby's colleague said: "Us girls on the ward are trying to get some prizes together for a raffle for Ruby so we can get a good amount for her GoFundMe.

"She so strong and amazing all the girls on the ward are thinking about her constantly, we're behind her.

"She's so strong and amazing."
