Mum who lost both parents in one year amazed by kind comment from Boots worker

A mum who suffers from low confidence following the death of her parents has told how a kind comment from a complete stranger completely made her day.

Sarah Mitchell, from St Helens in Merseyside, had been feeling "really down" about herself and her appearance, when she visited a branch of Boots with her boyfriend on Sunday, August 8.

"I was feeling really down about myself and my boyfriend said lets go out and buy some stuff," the 37-year-old told the Liverpool Echo.

"We’ve got a wedding on Saturday that we’re going to and I was treating myself to makeup and eyelashes and stuff like that to make myself feel good."

The mum-of-one accompanied her boyfriend to the checkout till, but was looking away when a simple comment from a staff member "changed her whole day."

Sarah continued: "I went to the counter and I was looking the other way because my boyfriend was sorting it and she just said 'you look really pretty and I love your eyelashes as well.'

"It wasn't as if I was interacting with her or chatting beforehand. She just looked at me and said it so it came across really genuine. It was really nice."

While it might seem like a simply gesture to most, Sarah is now encouraging others to share the kindness, "you have no idea what someone's day has been like or what their life is like."

The mum-of-one said she has "lost a lot of confidence over the years" and that she feels her feelings stem from bereavement, having lost her mum and dad in the same year, then her brother last year.

"I didn't walk out there thinking I’m fantastic or anything but when you get friends and close family or a partner saying that you think they have to say that because they love me," Sarah continued.

"So when a stranger says that you think they must mean it. I think a lot of people feel like that. It changed my whole day. She didn't have to say anything."

Sarah has since taken to social media to share the kind gesture and try and find the member of staff. She has also contacted Boots in the hopes of thanking her again.

She said: "I put it on because I thought I didn't catch her name or take her name down. I just noticed her hair, she had baby pink hair.

"I thought if she's local she may see it. I also went on Boots website and left a review for head office as I know how much that recognition can mean to someone.

"I just want to say thankyou to her for how she made me feel. She should be really proud of herself and I just hope she keeps on doing it to make other people feel better."

Posting to a local Facebook group, Sarah said: "'Just want to give a little 'shout out' to the lovely girl who served me at Boots on the retail today.

"I've lost a lot of confidence over the years and always feel rubbish about myself but just through her saying to me out of the blue as she was serving me "I just wanted to say, you look really pretty and I love your eyelashes" made a big difference to my day!

"It honestly might sound like nothing to some people, but it's lovely to hear, so thank you, you made my day! If only everyone was kind all the time, what a better world we would have."

Other members of the group were quick to comment saying how lovely the gesture was and urging others to do the same.

"Love this! People are so quick to rush to social media to complain about bad service they’ve received, but rarely do they take the time to praise good service," one commenter wrote.

Another added: "It only takes that one person to just say something positive, a lovely compliment to put a smile on someone’s face. I am so glad someone made you smile. It does give your confidence a boost. Well done whoever you are."
