Mum who delayed Covid vaccine as she was breastfeeding baby dies from the virus

A mum who delayed having a Covid jab because she was breastfeeding has died of the virus.

Dezi Scopesi was admitted to hospital in late October after contracting the condition on October 25, along with several other members of her her family.

She did not want to get vaccinated herself according to an online fundraiser set up by her friends and died on December 2.

The GoFundMe account in support of 23-year-old Dezi from Utah, US, confirmed her death and said she did not want to get vaccinated while breastfeeding out of concern for her infant's health.

Her husband Stephen Scopesi-Steadman and the couple's son Leo, now aged one, recovered from the virus quickly, but Dezi's condition quickly deteriorated until she was brought into hospital on October 29.

The online fundraiser was first created to allow Stephen go on family leave.

His job allowed him 12 weeks leave, but it was unpaid, - and the fundraiser was also aimed at covering his wife's medical expenses.

On the fundraising page LaShae Steele said: "She was planning on getting vaccinated, but was breastfeeding and had concerns over the vaccine's effect on her baby

"Otherwise she was a perfectly healthy 23-year-old working mother without any major co-morbidities.

"Within a week she had difficulty catching her breath and she was admitted to hospital on October 29."

LaShae Steele confirmed Dezi Scopesi's death on December 2 and thanked the community for its support.

She wrote: "It is with extremely heavy hearts that we let you all know…our sweet Dezi passed away on Thursday evening.

"We feel so much strength and comfort from the endless love and support we have received from all of you."

As of Friday morning the page had earned $42,854, (£32,500) nearing its fundraising goal of $50,000.

A memorial page has also been set up in Dezi's memory.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has previously said "recently pregnant woman are more likely to get severely sick" from the virus.

A section on breastfeeding and caring for newborns while fighting the virus on CDC's site says: "Although the absolute risks are low, people who are pregnant or recently pregnant are more likely to get severely ill from COVID-19 compared with people who are not pregnant."
