Self-proclaimed "really nerdy" expectant parents got their own back on their family - who labelled them "cruel" for wanting a fandom name for their baby. However, what was initially intended to be a harmless joke backfired as the family broke down into tears and spat harmful comments.
The mum-to-be explained how she and her partner had given their family fake baby name suggestions for their unborn child, as they didn't want to tell them what they'd picked. The misleading joke went too far though, as the mother-in-law made a harsh statement that the parents have "ruined the child's life already".

In the post on popular forum Reddit, the expecting mum explained how everything erupted into chaos: "My husband and I are having a baby, and we already have some names that we like.
"When asked by family what we were thinking for names, we made the mistake of telling them.
"My husband and I are really nerdy and we're also into mythology and are big gamers. We're both very much the odd ones out in each of our families.
"We wanted a fandom name - but not something we thought was ridiculous - and we mentioned this, which caused some relatives to get really p***y and start calling us names, saying we were being cruel (before they even heard what names are on the list).
"So, my husband and I shared a look and we had the same thought to just take the p**s . So, I said that if it was a boy, he'd be named Dovahkin (from Skyrim) and if it was a girl, she'd be named Elphaba (from Wicked)."

The harmless joke quickly backfired as the family broke down into tears and everything erupted into "chaos".
The woman continued: "Well, it was chaos. They were super angry, my mother-in-law started crying because we've 'ruined the child's life already'.
"We kept to our lie and made a hasty exit after nobody would calm down. We got nasty messages all night and this morning.
"I met up with my best friend today and told her the full story and she said we acted horribly towards our family and we deserve the comments we got," she added.
"She also said that if we don't set the record straight then any personalised baby gifts we might receive would end up being a waste of money. So tell me, am I being unreasonable?"
Seeking advice from fellow users online about the ordeal, it caused a string of controversy in the comment section.
"Even if you did name your child something stupid because it's a fandom you love, that's not their place to criticise," one person said.
Another agreed: "Your child, your choice."
On the other hand, people quickly came to the defence of the unborn child, stating that the choices of names were unreasonable.
One person claimed: "The child is not an extension of his parents and shouldn't have to wear a name that causes him problems at school or at work.
"The child has to live with the name, not the parents and the child's name should not be used as a advertisement for the hobbies and interests of the parents."
A second added: "Imagine going through middle school or trying to get a professional job if you were called some dumb fandom name like Khaleesi or Neo or Weasley or whatever.
"You will be teased for it, and it will count against you if you have a professional career."
