Mum unable to 'speak or walk properly after metal wash bin assault'

A petrified mum has reportedly been left fearing for her life and unable to walk or speak properly after she was allegedly beaten with a metal washing bin.

The 47-year-old woman suffered a bleed on her brain and was confined to hospital for four weeks after she was allegedly attacked with a laundry basket lid.

Police arrested a man on suspicion of actual bodily harm (ABH), but he has since been released on bail by officers.

Birmingham Live reports that, when contacted, all the shaken mum could say was: "Hello, it's a bit hard. Do you know I can't imagine the violence that happened and...yeah."

The incident allegedly took place on June 23, 2021, but her partner has said her health soon declined with her suffering seizures, a bleed on the brain and later even struggling to talk, walk or write.

Paramedics and police officers arrived on scene, but her partner says she didn't want to go to hospital as she felt 'too scared and was pushed back into a corner again'.

He said: "Her health deteriorated two days later on June 25, she started having seizures, we had to send her into hospital, they discharged her five six days later saying she'd be alright.

"But her health has really deteriorated she couldn't walk anywhere, couldn't talk properly."

They had a nurse visit her home and it was decided she needed to go back to hospital, where a bleed on her brain was uncovered.

"We made the decision she needed to go back to hospital, when she did they said there was a bleed to the brain, she stayed in hospital near enough four weeks.

"She's come out now and she's lost her speech, she hasn't spoken properly.

"She's writing a journal and you can see she can't write properly, she's forgetful, her life skills speaking, walking, writing have literally gone.

"She hasn't been going to work she has lost her ability to go to work, she's trying to get back to her normal self.

"She used to be a carer but now I'm caring for her because of the injuries that happened to her. She's scared now, he's still out there."

West Midlands Police said a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm after what they described as a "traumatic ordeal".

He has been bailed with strict conditions - which have been recently extended to support the victim.

A full statement from the force read: "We have carried out a comprehensive investigation into this matter and it remains an active investigation.

“A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm following the initial report; he was also detained on suspicion of assault without causing injury against someone else.

“He has been bailed with strict conditions not to contact the victim while we explore all available evidence. Those bail conditions were recently extended to offer the victim continued protection.

"We took an initial statement from the victim soon after the traumatic ordeal and took a follow-up statement this week. We've also taken other witness statements and obtained medical notes and images of her injuries to assist our enquiries.

"After pursuing all lines of evidence we can approach the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) if we believe there is a prosecution case against a suspect. At this stage a number of factors are considered, including the level of injury, to establish what offence a suspect should be charged with.

"We hope the victim is able to make as full a recovery as possible and we'll keep her updated on the progress of our investigation.”
