Mum transforms hallway with slat wall made from B&M and B&Q bargains

The hallway is an important part of the home, with it being the first thing guests see as they walk into your abode.

It can be quite tricky and expensive to create a unique welcoming space, but one mum from Sheffield has managed just that. Lori Beach, 42, an IT professional, bought wood from B&Q and grey spray paint from B&M to create a statement slat wall, completely transforming her hallway.

As reported by LatestDeals, Lori told money-saving Facebook group DIY On A Budget UK: "Over the past few years, we have done a lot of projects to the house, from the front garden to the back garden. I wanted to go for a different look for the hallway, so I looked around for ideas."

"I saw the wall slat from a number of companies but they were a bit pricey. I was quoted over £380 to buy the wood panels excluding fitting, so I decided to have a go at it myself. I bought the wood from B&Q which came to a cost of £81.

"I then bought some grey spray paint from B&M for £10 and I had leftover black and white paints from previous projects. I saved a lot of money by doing it myself from scratch. It cost me under £100 in total compared to the £380 I was quoted.

Lori had a few challenges creating the slat wall. She continued: “For starters the wood was not straight, being a natural material. Also, it would not stick to the wall with no more nails glue, so I had to use a staple gun to attach them to the wall.

"This was particularly challenging as the wall wasn't even straight either. All this did not deter me from achieving my goal, though. I was well pleased with the result as the hallway looked totally transformed.

"I went for grey on the slats to match the rest of the house's colour scheme. My advice to people wanting to save a bit of money is to have a go at it yourselves. You will have challenges on the way but the work is rewarding when you finish and look back at it. There are plenty of videos out there that show you how to do it step by step.

"I have since assisted many people with advice on similar projects and many other different ones. I am privileged to have the help of my husband and my brother who assist me with the heavy parts of my projects, although half the time I have to twist their arms or bribe them to help!

"I have really enjoyed this project as it only took half a day to do. I think I will be doing more of the slat wall decoration in more areas of the house!”
