Mum told to 'parent properly' after admitting leaving daughter alone in the park

A mum has been slammed after admitting she left her three-year-old daughter alone at the park.

The mum said she had been at a playpark with her child when both she and her daughter needed to use the toilet.

The mum said once her daughter had finished she "refused to wait' for her mother and dashed back to the park by herself.

The mum decided to use the toilet first, before going to find the youngster because she was desperate for the loo - but was left second guessing her decision.

Taking to Mumsnet she asked fellow parents if she had done the right thing, or whether she should have gone and retrieved her daughter and went back to the toilet together.

She said: "Not sure if this is an AIBU (am I being unreasonable) or more WWYD (what would you do) but was at a rural touristy attraction.

"When we arrived both DD (darling daughter) (3, nearly 4) and me needed the loo. DD went then refused to wait for me and ran out to the play area (toilets were within the play area but not staffed/ticketed).

"I told her to wait but she said no and was off, told me she was going on the slides as she legged it away! We've been there before so she knows where she's going.

"I had to go to the loo and therefore she played in the park for 2 minutes unsupervised. AIBU?

"YES - i should have got her back and made her stay with me.

"NO - she is OK for 2 mins, she knows where I am.

"What would others do? She is very independent and confident but it's just the safety aspect."

However, despite her explanation, the mum was blasted by other parents and accused of "rubbish parenting" for leaving the child unattended.

One mum said: "You need to parent her properly. Teach her to listen and do as she is told for a start."

Another agreed: "I think the bigger problem is that your toddler disobeyed you and you let it happen with zero consequence.

"Untold things could happen in three minutes whilst you use the toilet, and a 3 year old who won't listen to mum has no concept of not going off with strangers. Yes it's highly unlikely, but do you want that risk?"

Another chimed in: "I don't really get how this could happen as I would've had a child that age in the cubicle with me, so they wouldn't have been able to run off. You need to parent your child more effectively."

While some were concerned with the child's disobedience, others were uncomfortable about the safety aspect.

One said: "Absolutely no way. I can't believe you even need to ask."

Another added: "My 6 year old wouldn’t have been left on his own in a park while I went to the toilet! At 3 years old there isn’t a chance in hell I’d have left him alone in a public place full of possible dangers."

"It only takes a moment for someone to snatch a child. No way would I do this," said another

Another said: "Parent your child ffs."

"That is really rubbish parenting op. She should have been in the same cubicle as you. If she ran off you should have run after her and brought her back!!" said another.
