Mum-to-be who threw glass ashtray at paramedic in drunken rage spared jail

A mum-to-be appeared in Liverpool Magistrates' Court this afternoon (June 29) after assaulting a paramedic, police officer and a detention officer.

Jane Murphy, 35, appeared before District Judge Hatton after she had pleaded guilty to three counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

Georgiana Panteli, prosecuting, explained how police officers rushed to Murphy's address at around 4.35am on July 15 last year, after Murphy called the police claiming she had been assaulted.

When officers arrived they discovered she was drunk and found a pool of blood in the middle of the floor.

An ambulance was called and as a paramedic assessed her he sat on the sofa, which is when Murphy "started playing with her boob" and giving it voices.

The NHS worker, Daniel Schooler, laughed along in an attempt to placate the situation - however, this made Murphy angry.

She then threw a glass ashtray at him, which fortunately did not hit him, although some ash got onto his trousers.

The 35-year-old, who is now 14 weeks pregnant, took the mirror off the wall and looked as though she was going to throw that at Mr Schooler too.

She also shook her arms in order to splatter her own blood around the room.

Officers then took Murphy, of Westmorland Drive, Liverpool, outside and into the ambulance, where she continued to act out at the emergency worker.

She was arrested and taken to hospital to have her injury seen to at around 5.45am - and while there began banging on a glass door.

Murphy was then discharged and taken to St Anne Street Police Station at 7.30am.

Ms Panteli said: "She became aggressive and violent. Duty station officers tried to restrain her at which point she kicked Ginta Ciemina in the legs.

In interview she claimed she could not recollect what had happened but refused to watch bodycam footage of the incidents.

At the time she said: "I'm ashamed of myself."

The court heard how Murphy has no previous convictions but was cautioned in 2015 for assaulting a constable.

Matthew O'Neill, defending, explained that she had a lack of memory of the night which is her own responsibility as she had consumed so much alcohol.

The court heard how she suffers with depression which has been the result of the last few years and of having been a victim of domestic violence.

Mr O'Neill said: "The person you see before you is not the same. She is 14 weeks pregnant and hasn't consumed any alcohol since."

He explained that her pregnancy will ensure she doesn't consume alcohol in the foreseeable future and said her mental health seemed a lot better.

Murphy was given full credit for early guilty pleas and ordered to serve a eight months sentence suspended for 18 months.

She was ordered to complete 20 days of rehabilitation requirement days and to pay £300 in compensation to her victims.
