Mum-to-be's fury after relative says her 'controversial' baby name will make people think she is a 'troublemaker'

A mum -to-be was left furious after her mother-in-law told her the name she has chosen for her baby will make people think she is a 'troublemaker'.

The pregnant woman said both she and her partner had agreed on a name they both love and her own family also love the name.

However, when she shared the 'controversial' moniker with her partner's mother she was fuming when the woman told her she 'hates' it and it is a 'bad' name.

Taking to mumsnet for advice from fellow parents, the woman said: "I’ve just found out I’m expecting a baby girl.

"My partner and I plan on calling our little girl Rebel with the intention she will be Rebby for short after a very close friend.

"My family love the name and I was going to keep it a secret but my MIL found out my mum knew and pestered me to tell her.

"She hates the name (part of the reason I kind of didn’t want to tell her) and now I’m having second thoughts on a name we have loved for a long time.

"Is it such a bad name? She says people will just automatically assume ‘rebel’ as in troublemaker."

But fellow mums told the woman to ignore her mother-in-law. One said: "If you like it; use it! I work in childcare and I love names that aren't popular or that I haven't heard before."

Another said: "Is she hard of understanding? No one assumes that a Daisy is a flower or that a Tracey traces things all day. It's fab. Use it!"

However others urged the mum-to-be to choose something 'more conventional' with some describing the name as 'awful'.

One said: "Would you like to be called Rebel? It's a very unusual name, and I suspect very few would actually go through life without changing it or resenting their parents for it at some point. I'm not going to say it's a bad name, but I don't think it's going to be fun constantly hearing jokes about your name.

"Perhaps it would be better suited as a middle name, she can still have the nickname Rebby, but will have a more conventional name to fall back on."

Another agreed: "It's up to you completely but I really, really dislike the name. You are naming an adult woman as well as a baby."

Another kept her response simple, saying: "Yes it's awful."

Another user said: "It is really bad in my opinion yes, and will just be a source of hassle for your dd. I am not surprised MIL is objecting, even the most hands off MIL would feel obliged to do try and step in I think!"
