Mum throws 'sausage or taco' party instead of gender reveal - but some are offended

A pregnant mum has been left surprised by the number of angry comments she's received after opting to throw a "sausage or taco" party for her unborn baby instead of a gender reveal.

The food items here of course refer to genitalia, with the party name inspired by a cheeky line from the romantic comedy 50 First Dates.

Excited mum Rachenne was visibly delighted after cutting into a cake to reveal a concealed taco - a twist on the more traditional blue or pink sponge - but not everyone liked the idea.

Gender reveal parties have become the norm in recent years, with parents using such occasions to announce whether their little one will be a boy or a girl. However, as popular as such parties are, they have been met with some disapproval.

Some critics have noted that it would more accurate to announce a baby's sex rather than their gender.

With this in mind, Rachenne has shared footage of her "sausage or taco" party to TikTok, in a bid to normalise sex reveal parties over gender reveals.

In a clip that's clocked up more than 181k likes, Rachenne, who lives in Toronto, showed her followers some of the decorations she'd displayed for the celebration, including a hotdog sign and a smiling hotdog balloon.

Guests were asked to guess 'sausage' or 'taco', adding their guess to one of two jars, much like a regular gender reveal party.

Naturally, they were also served up a meal of hotdogs and tacos with a choice of beef or turkey filling.

Rachenne wrote: "I guess 'sex reveal party' doesn't have quite the same ring to it, but it's more correct."

Many praised the "creative and fun" idea, but others reacted furiously (@rachenne)

Although many praised the unique party as a "great idea", hailing it as "creative and fun", there were a number of people who just weren't keen at all.

One person wrote, "Nope, gender reveal is just fine", while another argued, "that's somehow so much worse [than a gender reveal]."

A third shuddered: "I’ve seen some stuff in my life but my god."

Rachenne herself was surprised by how negative some of the comments were, responding to some of the criticism in a follow-up vid.

Amused by some of the angrier reactions, Rachenne said: "I didn't realise how many people were offended by the use of sausage and taco.

"I don't get it! It's actually a joke from 50 First Dates so if you're familiar with that movie maybe you'll recognise it, maybe not because I'm old, but who knows!

"I think it's really funny. If you don't want to use food to describe genitalia, and you want to use penis and vagina, or titi and pekpek if you're Filipino, then go for it.

"I don't understand why this is such a big deal, but that's the world we live in so all the best to you!"
