Mum tells son's 'selfish' killer he'll never understand her grief

A courageous mum told a killer driver her son died because of his "selfish choices".

Adam Edwards suffered fatal injuries when Andrew Price smashed a black Lexus into parked cars and front gardens at 76mph.

CCTV footage captured Price's "shocking, deadly speeds" while over the limit and reportedly swigging alcohol at the wheel.

He lost control of the car and hit four different vehicles, before careering into two front gardens in Vista Road, Haydock.

Backseat passenger Adam, 19, died on the way to hospital, while front seat passenger, Anthony Finch, 25, was left in a coma and suffered life changing injuries.

Price, 27, of Southworth Road, Newton-le-Willows, today admitted causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving at Liverpool Crown Court.

He was then faced by Adam's mum, Lynn Edwards, and lowered his head in shame as she read out a powerful victim personal statement.

The grieving mum said: "Adam was 19 when he was killed. Had he been alive today Adam and my family would have just celebrated his 21st birthday.

"Instead Adam was cruelly taken from us. Not in a tragic accident, but instead by the selfish choices made by the driver of the car he was travelling in.

"The driver of that vehicle will never understand the pain and grief we as a family have gone through and always will be going through.

"Losing Adam has changed our lives forever and our lives will never be the same without Adam."

Ms Edwards said she and her husband Lee Edwards were proud of and loved Adam, plus his older brother, younger brother and little sister, who were "an extremely close little family".

She said: "All our lives were turned upside down on the evening of Wednesday, December 11, 2019, when we were awoken at home by two police officers who had called to tell us that Adam had died in a car crash earlier that night.

"How do you deal with that type of news? I'm not sure that you do. Or certainly I haven't yet nearly two years after he was killed."

Ms Edwards said they had all felt "pain and anxiety" and both she and Adam's dad had tried to hold things together for their family.

She said: "I am so proud of my kids for the way they have coped with their brother's death but that doesn't mean they haven't been affected. Young children don't expect to lose an older brother in this way. This has caused anxiety and sleepless nights for all of them.

"And then there is me. I just can't make sense of it. It's not the natural order of things. You don't expect to outlive any of your children."

Ms Edwards added: "Our family life has been changed forever. We celebrated Adam's 21st birthday without him. How can that be right?

Andrew Price, 27, of Southworth Road, Newton-le-Willows (Liverpool Echo)

"We will never experience the joy of watching him get married. Would he have had children? Our grandchildren - nieces and nephews to Adam's brothers and sister.

"All of that has been taken away from us by the driver of the car he was a passenger in."

Prosecutors said Price hit nearly 100mph as he overtook cars in 30 and 40mph zones on the wrong side of wet roads during rainy weather.

They said the crash, which happened near Vista Road's junction with Queen's Road, at around 8.50pm, came after he had swerved back into the correct lane to avoid a parked bus.

Judge Stuart Driver, QC, told Price: "You chose deliberately to drive very dangerously for no reason other than your own pleasure."

He jailed him for nine years and banned him from the road for nine and a half years.

Speaking after the case, Inspector Stuart McIver, of Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit, said: "This was a devastating crash, caused by Price's recklessness and disregard for the safety of himself and others in the car that night.

"That a young man lost his life is the absolutely tragic but avoidable consequence of the decisions Price made in driving at high speed in a residential area.

“We continue to support Adam's family and pass on our sincere condolences for their loss. Perhaps today's sentencing will provide some comfort after almost two years has passed.

"I also hope that the effect it has had on Adam's family and friends and the wider community shows what can and does happen when vehicles are driven dangerously on our roads.

"Adam's family have shown dignity and courage throughout this process and their words below should make others think twice about taking to our roads in the manner Price did that night."
