Strangers in awe as mum helps ducklings save themselves

A group of strangers banded together to help a lost family of ducklings cross the road during rush hour.

Beverley Hogan, 50, took a series of adorable videos of the ducks running along the pavement and through Calderstones Park on Friday, June 10. She initially came across the ducks on Gipsy Lane when she nearly ran them over.

The mum-of-two got out of her car and tried to get the ducks out of the way of passing cars. To her surprise, the ducks began to follow her and ran for almost half an hour behind her.

A delivery man on Druids Cross had just finished unloading some shopping and offered to help her stop the busy traffic so the ducks could cross the main roads to Calderstones Park. Another stranger, called Dave, also offered his assistance.

Between them, they stopped the traffic and ushered the ducklings across the A562.

Beverley, a receptionist from Calderstones, said: “I was just overwhelmed. I would never have made it across the road without them! It was absolutely unbelievable. They just followed me – it was the strangest thing. It was quite an exciting half an hour.”

The videos show the mother duck and her five ducklings – two yellow and three black – sprinting down the pavement behind Beverley before arriving safely at the park’s lake. Beverley said everyone at the park watched in awe as she walked past with the ducks trailing behind her.

She said: “I felt like the pied piper! Lots of people said they wouldn’t have known how to move the ducks but neither did I. They just followed me.”

Beverley’s post on Facebook has received hundreds of likes and comments about the heart-warming story, with some saying it had reduced them to tears. The animal lover was even more surprised when she came across her ducks again on Sunday – this time accompanied by the father duck too.
