Mum, stepdad and teenager all charged after boy, 5, found dead in river

The stepdad of a five-year-old boy found dead in a river has been charged with his murder.

Logan Mwangi's mum has been charged with perverting the course of justice, along with a 13-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons.

John Cole, 39, has been charged murdering Logan, also known as Logan Williamson, South Wales Police said last night.

Logan's mum Angharad Williamson, who gave birth to a second son in February last year, reportedly became engaged Jay Cole, her partner, less than 10 weeks ago.

The couple were planning their wedding for next year with Logan expected to have been a pageboy, according to neighbours in Bridgend.

Police have said the pair, along with a 13-year-old boy, have been remanded in custody and will appear before Cardiff Magistrates’ Court today.

Neighbours heard his mother desperately shouting, "the back door was open".

His body was found later that day in the nearby River Ogmore and the little boy was rushed to the Princess of Wales Hospital, where it was confirmed he had died.

Neighbours said detectives had seized video from the family's doorbell camera.

A local man said: "One of our neighbours said that the mum had a camera fitted on her doorbell. The police took the doorbell."

Police divers spent several days searching the waters of the Ogmore River after Logan’s death.

A local woman said Logan had been self-isolating at the family home after testing positive for Covid.

Neighbours said Logan was "beyond excited" about taking part in his mum's wedding wedding next year, and dressing up for the big day.

A neighbour said: "It was a surprise when she said they were engaged because her partner wasn't around all the time.

"I think they were planning on getting married next year but they wanted to get the kids involved.

"Logan was beyond excited - he was also so smiley. He didn't really know what a pageboy was - only that it meant getting dressed up.

Heartbroken family friends have paid tribute to Logan on Facebook since news of the boy’s death broke.
