Mum splashed with oven cleaner thought skin was 'rotting away when it bubbled and turned black'

A mum ended up in hospital with serious chemical burns after using oven cleaner.

Hayley Cinnamond's arm turned black and she felt it was rotting away the day after some of the fluid splashed on to her arm as she cleaned her cooker.

The 21-year-old was treated in the burns unit at her local hospital when the skin on her arm started bubbling.

Supermarket own brand cleaning products really do work

The drama unfolded on Mother's Day when Hayley tried washing the Oven Brite cleaner from her forearm for 20 minutes, the Liverpool Echo reports.

With two little boys to run after, she admits it was difficult to clean it thoroughly.

Throughout the next day, Hayley, who is mum to 19-month-old Oliver and four-month-old baby Noah, noticed that the area had become red and irritated.

But it was only when her arm started to turn black that she decided to get it checked at the Halewood Centre.

Now Hayley wants to warn others of the dangers of oven cleaners.

She explained: “My arm started bubbling.

“It was that bad I could not feel a thing in the middle of the burn. This is the first time I’ve used the product.”

Hayley said that the chemical burn was smothered in hydrogel and was bandaged up by medics, who advised her to head to A&E.

Hayley visited Whiston Hospital’s A&E department where doctors told her that the pH level on her skin ranged between 10 and 11, when the optimum level should be 5.5.

She was referred to the burns unit and kept in overnight, with her partner Stephen Penquet, 27, looking after the children while she was in hospital.

Hayley was discharged the following afternoon, but must return next week to check on the progress of the burn.

Mum who thought her kitchen floor was dark grey disgusted to learn the truth

Specialists told her that she may have to undergo surgery - and possibly have a skin graft.

Hayley said: “I can’t believe the damage it’s caused, my skin has fallen off and the area is raw.

“You do everything with your hands, especially with two young children.

“It feels as though my skin is pulling every time I pick up my children.”

A spokesperson for Oven Brite said: “We are extremely sorry to hear that burns of this severity have been sustained while using this product.

“Oven Brite does contain a very dangerous corrosive liquid which should be treated with the utmost respect and all the advice on the packaging and bottle should be adhered to.

“We are duty bound by various regulations to ensure that this product carries the relevant warnings about the risks associated with the contents, both on the product and the packaging, but, that said, unfortunately accidents can occur, but are few and far between.

“In the event of skin contact, either directly or from contaminated clothing, the area should be flushed immediately with cold water for as long as possible until the burning has subsided, and then seek medical advice.”
