A mum was left ‘speechless’ when her friend asked her to split the cost of a £92 takeaway after inviting her round for dinner.
The woman said she was left feeling ‘really uncomfortable afterwards”, having not expected to contribute to the cost of the meal. Airing the experience on Mumnet’s Am I Being Unreasonable thread, the woman asked others what they thought, saying the situation has been ‘bugging’ her since it happened.
She wrote: “I visited my friend's home recently with my 12 year old and she has three kids herself and lives in a very nice large home (just for information). I took some gifts for them then early evening she said there was a great Chinese nearby and should we order a takeaway?

“Great idea I ordered a few dishes for me and my daughter and she ordered 5 dishes for her and her 3 children. She then said that’s £92 and just give her £45 .
“I was speechless as we were guests in her home and she invited us for dinner and I was scrambling through my purse as I had my cards on me and only just had enough cash to give her. I would never do that to a guest in my home and I felt really uncomfortable afterwards.”
She later clarified in the thread: “I was invited for dinner as in she was cooking it and she ordered for herself and her three children and she asked me what we wanted so I ordered a few dishes. I was just a bit shocked as she never said she was going to order a Chinese.”
But the woman received a mixed response from other Mumsnet users, with some saying she should’ve expected to split the cost. One person wrote: “I’d expect to pay towards a takeaway in friend’s house”.
A second added: “I would expect to split a takeaway, just as I would a meal in a restaurant.”
A third said: “Of course you pay for a takeaway! However you should have just paid for your dishes you ordered, not split 50:50”. While a fourth person added: “If I’ve ever had takeaway at friends I’ve always split half or at least what I’ve ordered. Why would I expect friend to pay? Sounds like a lot of food and money tho!”
Many others also agreed she should’ve contributed to the cost. One person said: “I wouldn’t expect to pay half but I’d expect to pay for what I ordered.”
While another person said: “I would have added up the amount for the dishes I had ordered and paid that.”
And a third said: “I would've worked out how much my share was and paid that. But yes it's a bit cheeky ordering a takeaway when she invited you round for dinner, I mean what if you didn't have enough money for a takeaway?!”
