Mum speaks out after boy, 10, approaches son in the park

The mum of a young boy with autism has spoken about the kind actions of a ten-year-old who she said ‘made the family’s day’.

Rebecca Green, who lives in Southport, said she was visiting a park with her son Karne, 7, on Friday afternoon (July 29) when he went over and approached three boys who were playing nearby.

Rebecca, 42, said one of the boys, named Alistair, then stopped to speak to Karne, who is non-verbal.

The mum said Alistair then gave her son a high five, leaving her touched by how nice the 10-year-old's gesture was. She told the ECHO nothing like that had never happened before.

She said: "Karne finished on the roundabout in the park and Alistair came over and introduced himself. He must have realised he was non-verbal but he was still so nice. People just ignore him because he doesn't talk and because of the noises he makes.

"I said to Alistair thank you because no one has ever really done anything like that. It's just nice for him to be acknowledged. He's just the same as any boy. He just can't talk so he can't verbalise what he's thinking."

Rebecca took to Facebook to tell people how much the interaction meant to her, with her posting in a number of local Facebook groups before Alistair's mum commented on one of the posts. She said: "Yes it was him, thank you for sharing this message."

Karne's dad also commented. He said: "I’m the little man’s daddy and I just want to add a big thank you to your kind son, he has made our day. It’s the little things that mean the most."

Rebecca, who works at Southport Hospital, added: "I guess in that moment when Alistair approached my son I felt warm inside, proud of him for acknowledging my son and proud of my son for returning his high five and then emotional witnessing such a special moment in our lives."
