Mum sparks debate after being told her supermarket trolley use is 'illegal'

A mother shopping with her two children has sparked a fierce debate online after being told the use of her trolley was "illegal" .

The mum, from Sydney, Australia, claimed she was shamed for sitting her two children on the seat of the trolley while she completed her grocery shop.

She took to Facebook to ask other parents if she was in the wrong.

The mother also shared the picture of two children sat side-by-side with their legs coming through the back of the shopping trolley.

She wrote: "I was told off by a lady today and she told me it's illegal.

"Is she correct?"

Scores of parents replied, with some pointing out the trolleys usually have a weight limit of 18kg.

The mum added the combined weight of her two children was 35kg.

One parent replied: "Probably not illegal, but also not a wise idea because of the potential risk of the trolley falling if the weight becomes unbalanced as the kids move.

"It’s kind of a shame the person who told you didn’t try to explain more kindly."

Another, added: "I don’t know about illegal but if their combined weight is significantly more than the limit stated, your trolley might not be balanced and could tip when you go over a bump if they rock it."

Many other mothers agreed they also put their children in the seats in the trolleys as many admitted shopping without the provided seat and young children can be a “nightmare”.
