Mum sparks breastfeeding debate as she teaches two-year-old son 'boundaries'

Every mum's infant feeding experience is different - some women choose to breastfeed and others prefer to give their children formula.

But one mum has stirred up a debate over her nursing decisions.

Mikaela de la Myco, from California, has a two-year-old son, Marten, whom she still breastfeeds, reports Daily Star.

She explained how she set boundaries with her son in a video on her TikTok @mamadelamyco.

The clip, which has since been viewed 9.8 million times sees Mikaela asking Marten if she wants milk and "Where do your hands go?"

Marten places his hands on his knees until his mum asks: "Which one?"

He points at her left breast and Mikaela signals for him to wait and be patient as "mummy does it," before he begins nursing.

"Honestly, I know this probably looks weird to a lot of people, but I almost quit bf [breastfeeding] because this was so hard to accomplish without any good extended breastfeeding models," she wrote at the end of the video.

"Is this 'gross' to you? The problem didn't start until Marten became a toddler, what do you think?"

Since being posted, the video has racked up more than 893,000 likes and 20,800 comments from viewers who praised her for teaching him how to respect her boundaries.

One person said: "The problem is not in the action, the problem is our society."

Another wrote: "I think you're doing a wonderful job. We went to 3 years with my youngest and I def taught him nursing etiquette."

"There are literally so many benefits to this. It's 2022, go on the internet and do some research," wrote a third.

While someone else said: "It’s not gross, it’s just uncommon and new to the mainstream, but you are doing a wonderful job, his manners and patience is only going to grow."

But some mums wondered whether Marten was "too old" to be nursing.

One person wrote: "I think he’s too old... just my opinion — I feel like at that stage it’s more for you not wanting to let go [than] his benefit.

"That could be harmful later."

While another wondered: "I feel he is old enough to drink out of a sippie cup, why not just pump?"
