Mum slapped with curfew after ignoring driving ban and lockdown to pick up friends

A mum was slapped with a night-time court curfew after breaking a driving ban and ignoring government advice to drive to pick up her friends.

Banned driver Carly Prosser, 30, was caught behind the wheel just hours after the announcement of Boris Johnson's social distancing policy.

She now faces jail if she goes out between 7pm and 6am.

A court heard she was spotted by police at a petrol station - who checked her number plate and found her car was uninsured.

The mum-of-one told officers she was on her way to pick up friends in her Peugeot at 1am on Wednesday morning (25th March).

Prosecutor Mike Williams said: "She showed a total disregard for the advice given by the government.

”The defendant said she was driving the vehicle to pick up friends.

"She told them she was a disqualified driver and that she was banned until November 2020."

Prosser had been banned from driving for 39 months after being convicted of drink-driving in 2017.

On Wednesday, Newport Magistrates Court heard she had been working as a self employed painter and decorator but was currently receiving universal credit.

Prosser, of Aberbargoed, Caerphilly, Wales, admitted driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.

Judge David Parsons handed her an electronic tag banning her from leaving her house between 7pm and 6am for eight weeks.

She was also banned from driving for another 12 months and she was fined £100 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £92 surcharge.

Judge Parsons said: “If you break this curfew or drive while disqualified again I will send you to prison.”
