Mum shuts down haters who say it's 'embarrassing' to charge teen daughter rent

A mum who was slammed for charging her daughter rent has hit back, telling trolls to "shut up."

New Zealand mum Kat Clark posted a video of her and her daughter Latisha participating in a popular TikTok game on her account @katclark86, where two people try to throw a pen into a cup whilst saying their wish.

If it goes in, the other person has to do what they've asked.

The game starts with 18-year-old Latisha saying: "I don't have to pay rent for the rest of the year."

However, shortly after posting the video, Kat started receiving comments from people asking why she was charging Latisha rent to live at home.

One person said: "Let your daughter live her childhood!!!!!!! She's 18!!!! She shouldn't be paying rent!!!!"

Another commented: "People would hate to hear my 19-year-old and I split all the bills 50/50 including rent."

A third wrote: "You make your daughter pay you rent? Wtf bro she's your daughter. You brought her into this world by force and you charge her rent!"

While someone else said: "YOU MAKE HER PAY RENT NAHHHHH LOL WTF."

Kat put an end to the criticism in a follow-up video, where she said: "Point one, shut up. Literally, shut up.

"I have had so many negative comments about me charging Latisha rent or board and I don't want to hear it.

"Point two, She pays £26 ($50) a week, and it goes into an investment fund so that when she is old enough to move out, or when she wants to buy her first house or her first apartment she is going to have money there.

"So I feel like I am setting her up for success, while at the same time teaching her about the real world because it ain't free to live."

A number of Kat's followers were quick to comment, applauding her reasoning.

One person said: "Criticism comes from parents who have their adult children living at home with them who they do the washing for but complain that they're not motivated."

Another wrote: "I'm surprised at how many kids DON'T pay board these days. It teaches them responsibility. Why shouldn't they contribute to their household?"

A third commented: "Girl there is nothing wrong with charging rent."

Someone else put: "I pay my mum board. It helps her pay the bills to keep the roof over our head. Also a lot cheaper than renting elsewhere. It's taught me a lot."
