Mum shares VapoRub hack for soothing colds - but some say she's putting lives at risk

Having a cold isn't the end of the world, but when your nose is bunged up and you've got an awful cough, it sure can feel like it is.

One item that can be a miracle worker during these times is Vicks VapoRub, which is usually rubbed onto the chest to help relieve symptoms.

A woman recently shared a VapoRub life hack on social media, claiming when her family was feeling under the weather, she would add a spoonful of the stuff into her wax melt burner.

In the viral TikTok video, the mum filmed herself doing just that and the clip has since been watched more than 11 million times.

And she's not the only person to do this, several other TikTok users have said they also swear by this trick when they are sick.

While many people thought it was a clever idea and couldn't wait to try it out for themselves, others were very concerned.

Thousands commented on the TikTok, with some saying the life hack could actually prove pretty dangerous.

Some were worried about it starting a fire, while others proclaimed it wasn't safe and the fumes could harm pets in the home.

One person wrote: "Please don't do this if you have pets!!! Vicks aroma is dangerous to them!"

Another said: "Vicks have said this is highly likely to cause a fire. I used to do it too but it's 100% not worth the risk."

Someone else posted: "Put a spoonful in bathwater. It's less deathly."

A different user added: "Please don't do this if you have cats or dogs, it's really bad for their respiratory system and it can make them really sick."

The packaging on Vicks VapoRub contains two different sets of instructions - one for the 'rub on method' and one for 'inhalation method'.

The first instructs users to rub the product liberally onto their chest, throat and back. The second instructs users to melt two teaspoons of the VapoRub into a bowl of hot but not boiling water and inhale the vapours for 10-15 minutes.

It also features a warning never to reheat the mixture and not to put VapoRub in the microwave.

A statement on the Vicks website also warns against heating up the product.

It reads: "You should not heat or microwave Vicks VapoRub. Do not add Vicks VapoRub to hot water or any container where heating water. Doing so may cause splatters and burns."
