Mum shares unique animal name for son - but people think it's 'too aggressive'

Selecting the right name for your child can be an arduous task for parents, with lots of disagreements and upset along the way as favourite name choices get vetoed and thrown out. One mum-to-be has shared a potential name for her second child online, asking Reddit users to share their thoughts - and people didn't hold back.

The unnamed parent posted on the Name Nerds forum, explaining their first child had a unique name beginning with 'W' and they wanted their baby to have one as well. They suggested Wolfgang as the moniker they wanted to go with and asked for the 'good, the bad and the ugly' in terms of opinions on the name.

The mum's post read: "Looking for a W name for my son due in a few months. I like Wolfgang (nickname Wolfie) but want the good, the bad and the ugly reviews of it! My other son has a W name that is somewhat unique. Opinions?"

Fellow users were divided over the name, with some loving it and thinking Wolfie was an adorable nickname but numerous others immediately warning the mum that it sounded "aggressive" and "outdated".

One person said: "It's a lot to put on a human."

Another wrote: "I don't mean this unkindly but you asked what we think. I hate it. To me, it sounds aggressive and mean and ungainly. If I met a kid/adult with that name I would feel sorry for him. That said, it's not my kid. I don't like to be negative about names people love but this one to me is a real bummer."

A third posted: "It’s really not for me. I’m not a fan of naming your kid the name of an animal. And the nn wolfie sounds extremely forced."

Someone else joked: "Son, you were named after not just one, but a WHOLE GANG OF WOLVES. Be great."

A different user added: "It's a nice name but I will not give to my child at this time .. first its a bit outdated I feel like it's from 1700-1800 era. Second the generation is different... kids can be really mean so I would expect all sorts of weird monikers. If you want consider one of these. William Wilson Wyatt Wilder Warren Weston. You can add wolfe as a middle name it will be gorgeous."

While someone else commented: "Honestly, I think it's a lot to put on a kid in the US, especially with the alliterative last name. I knew a Wolfgang in high school who only ever went by Wolf because he would constantly get questions about his name. But he's a grown man by now so who knows, it's totally possible that he grew into his full name as he got older."
