Mum shares list of 'guilty pleasure' baby names

Many people have wacky ideas for names for their children - but in most cases the wilder ones stay as just that - ideas.

One parent took to Mumsnet to reveal her ‘guilty pleasures’ - sparking a big debate with other parents. Back in the day Bob Geldof calling his daughter Peaches, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Apple and Katie Price naming her child Princess raised many eyebrows - and more recently Elon Musk’s X Æ A-Xii probably pushed the boundaries further than ever, the Mirror reports.

But most people will laugh about them - but never dream of actually naming their child that way. Writing on Mumsnet she posted: “What are your guilty pleasure you wouldn’t even bother suggesting names? Mine are:

  • Lavender
  • Bluebell
  • Sailor
  • Scout
  • Shiloh
  • Forrest
  • Ophelia
  • Olive
  • Penelope
  • River
  • Rusty
  • Navy
  • Sylvie
  • Sunday
  • Tuesday

Some aren’t remotely controversial or weird - and can be described as traditional and not that off the wall. Of course you don’t come across many Sailors or youngsters called Navy - and Rusty does sound very small town American.

One mum raised a potential problem with her choice - and the Liverpool accent of her husband and wrote: “One of my favourite names is Florian. But only if it’s said in a French accent. My husband is scouse -can you imagine a little scouse Florian?!”

Other mums-to-be were quick to hop on the thread and comment some of their ‘guilty pleasure’ baby names. One person said: “Hovis.” Hmm, we’re not so sure about that one if we’re honest.”

A reader said: “Woody I loved it for DS 1&2 but it was vetoed before it had even left my mouth.” Another mum added “Just before my son was born my hormones convinced me that Paddington would be the perfect name.

“I’m still fond of it but luckily for my darling son it was vetoed the second I said it!” Another admitted her wish was a bit ‘cheesy’: “I actually really like Nevaeh! Not because it is “Heaven” backwards (which I agree is super cheesy), but just because I like the sound of it.”

Another mum commented their list of baby names they could never use, but adore:

  • Clarence
  • Roland
  • Walter
  • Kenneth
  • Lionel
  • Franklin
  • Nova
  • Lulu
  • Piper
  • Calliope
  • Cassandra
  • Melody
  • Fletcher
  • Spencer
  • Apollo
  • River
  • Forest
  • Skye
  • Clover
  • Flora

A mum said said: “Tallulah. Was desperate to use it but we definitely aren’t posh enough to carry it off!” A rather rogue comment was: “Banana.” Not too sure how we feel about this fruity name.

A mum said: “I would have loved a Diggory, but DH says he thinks Diggers is more suited to our next puppy.” Other mums were worried about potential nicknames, with one writing: “ I love Raphael but we have the most British sounding surname, it would sound ridiculous! And I hate Ralph or Ralphie so would insist on the full Raphael being used every time”
