Mum shares lightbulb hack that saves '£35 to £40 a month' ahead of new energy price cap

A woman has shared a "very wise" lightbulb hack that saved her "£35 to £40 a month" on her energy bills.

With the cost of living crisis continuing to worsen, and the energy price cap rising in October, households across the UK are looking for ways to keep bills as low as possible.

While higher costs will be unavoidable when the new price cap comes into effect on October 1, maximising energy efficiency at home can help save money.

One woman found that she could slash the cost of her energy bills simply by changing her lightbulbs. She took to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group to share the idea, writing: "I know people are worried about rising costs but don’t waste your money on battery powered lights.

"Please go to a pound shop and buy LED lightbulbs. We got them for £1 each so ok initial outlay but we changed every bulb and it saved £35 to £40 a month. So paid for itself in the first month.

"When you think that lights can account for 15% of your energy costs it’s worth changing your bulbs."

Before long, the post had received over 1,000 likes and almost 400 comments from Facebook users keen to share their thoughts on the idea. One wrote: "With lighting consuming around 40% of electricity during the darker months, this is a very wise idea!"

A second agreed: "You're absolutely right. Changing to low powered bulbs does help. A 5 watt bulb needs to be used for 200 hrs to use a kilowatt. Sensible to replace."

"Everyone should have done this years ago, first week I moved into my house I replaced every single bulb with LED's, the previous owners had none," revealed a third.

"We have LEDs everywhere saved us some money we also have them on timers," commented a fourth

"Thanks for the money saving tip will defo change mine," said a fifth, while a sixth echoed: "Finally someone with smart advice."

Meanwhile, a seventh stated: "We changed our last year well worth it."

Others shared further tips to cut down energy costs, with one suggesting: "You can buy LED energy saving bulbs, which are even better than Plain LED. Amazon have a good range"

A second said: "Smart meters help. U can monitor what you use. We have used less than £2 a day throughout summer and it's actual readings and I've set a budget.

"Best move I've made. As for gas I've used less that 50p a day through summer. If I keep heating off through winter that will keep the same."
