Mum shares idea for saving £780 a year and families are loving it

We all know how difficult it is to save, especially in the current climate. And where families are concerned, there's always something else the money needs spending on.

Whether it is new shoes, school trips or children's birthdays, most parents have little left over at the end of each month. But there are ways of boosting your chances of actually sticking to it and one idea has proved particularly popular for some.

The simple way of saving a whopping £780 a year was first suggested by us on our Manchester Family page at the beginning of 2020, and now parents are sharing the idea once again.

Back then we explained how we'd heard of other challenges - saving £2 coins or putting a certain amount away each day - but with the hectic lives most families lead, it was all too easy for these to go out the window in just the first few weeks of the new year.

And who really has the correct change in their wallet or purse EVERY day? That's why this idea will suit some families down to the ground, providing there is some money to stash that is.

The idea was first suggested on our Manchester Family page a few years back (Manchester Evening News)

Basically you write £10 up to £120 on a savings tin, put one of those amounts in each month and cross it off the list. By the time you've crossed them all off at the end of the year, you'll have saved a mammoth £780.

While it means on three months of the year you'll have to find £100 or more spare, on other months it will be much lower, so you can pick and choose when you're able to save the most.

In the post on our Manchester Family page, parents editor Emma Gill said: "So I've seen lots of ideas for saving money but none of them will really work for me - I never have change in my purse to do the penny challenge for example.

"That's why I'm giving this a go. Every pay day - or at the end of a month - you put in one of these amounts and then cross it off the list. By the end of the year it's a whopping £780!

You can start with just £10 a month (Manchester Evening News)

"It won't be easy - especially when it comes to the £120 month - but it's worth a go. I reckon I'll start with the £10 in January."

Dozens of people commented on the post, with many saying they'd give it a go themselves. Others suggested different ways they manage to save, including putting a few pounds away each week.
