Mum shares how families can save £780 a year and people are loving it

For families up and down the UK saving for money can often be difficult.

Whether it's new shoes, school trips or children's birthdays, a lot of parents have little left by the end of the month.

However, Manchester Evening News family writer Emma Gill has suggested a way for families and parents to save £780 a year.

The idea is you write £10 up to £120 on a savings tin, put one of those amounts in each month and cross it off the list. By the time you've crossed them all off at the end of the year, you'll have saved £780.

While it means on three months of the year you'll have to find £100 or more spare, on other months it will be much lower, so you can pick and choose when you're able to save the most.

MEN parents editor Emma Gill says: "So I've seen lots of ideas for saving money but none of them will really work for me - I never have change in my purse to do the penny challenge for example.

"That's why I'm giving this a go. Every pay day - or at the end of a month - you put in one of these amounts and then cross it off the list. By the end of the year it's a whopping £780!

"It won't be easy - especially when it comes to the £120 month - but it's worth a go. I reckon I'll start with the £10 in January."

Dozens of people have since taken to the idea across social media.

Tracey Jones said: "Good idea. I'm going to try this, thank you."

Others suggested other ways they manage to save, including saving £2 coins, or using the Tandem app, which rounds up your online spending to the nearest pound and puts it in savings.
