Mum shares her 'bin hack' that makes packing school lunchboxes so much easier

It's no secret that when it comes to food, some children can be pretty fussy eaters.

So packing lunchboxes for school can be a tricky task for some parents as one day their little ones might like a certain snack but then the next day they could hate it.

If this is sounding incredibly relatable to you, then you might want to keep on reading as one mum thinks she's come up with a way to get around this.

The parent from Canada, known only as Rachel, took to social media to share her 'bin hack' that she has been using to pack school lunchboxes ever since her kids moaned they were 'sick of sandwiches'.

The different foods are stored in 'bins' (Facebook)

As first reported by Fabulous, Rachel's packing system involves seven different 'bins' as she calls them, but by this, she means storage boxes or drawers.

Each 'bin' represents a different food type, such as meat, vegetables, fruit, carbohydrates, dairy and junk food.

Her children are able to pick items to go into their packed lunch and a number written on the front of each bin shows how many items from each they are allowed.

In a post on Facebook, Rachel explained: "When my kids complained they were sick of sandwiches, it reminded me that as mums, we all need new ideas for our kids and should help one another out.

"It's also a great way to give your kids more independence, they love helping to shop and portion the boxes out too.

"Each bin is trying to ensure the total gives a balanced diet.

"Granted, some items are not 100 per cent healthy, but they are better than the fast-food many are eating."

Examples of items include breadsticks or rice crackers in the carbohydrates bin and Babybels or yoghurts in the dairy one.

There's popcorn and pretzels in the junk food bin and the meat and veg section includes carrots, cucumber and chicken breast or ham.

The kids then can have a choice of a sweet treat that the mum has baked that week, which could be cookies or muffins.

Rachel added: "Whatever they don't eat at school becomes their snack when they come home."

Many fellow parents loved the bin system and said they would be trying it for themselves.

One person said: "This is great! I have two in school and one on the way. Saves so much time in the morning and my kids will actually eat their food with this."

Another replied: "Thanks so much for these wonderful suggestions! My kids hate sandwiches, it's always a battle to figure it out in a healthy way."
