Mum shares genius money-saving hack to keep bread fresh even after use-by date

As the cost of living continues to soar in the UK, many Brits are being forced to assess their spending habits, while finding ways to make their money go further. Food is of course one of the many things being affected by inflation and rising costs, which means many families will be looking to avoid food waste in as many ways as possible.

When it comes to fresh ingredients, one of the biggest causes of food waste comes when items aren’t eaten fast enough and are left to go past their use-by dates. Luckily one mum is on hand with a brilliant money -saving hack, which will allow you to keep hold of your leftover bread for much longer, without it going stale and needing to be thrown in the bin.

Unlike other food saving methods, this hack does not involve a freezer - and all you need is a piece of celery!

The mum took to Facebook group Feeding a Family on £1 a Day to share her thoughts after discovering the hack on YouTube, and it’s fair to say she was impressed with the results.

"I watched a YouTube video and it said if you put a stick of celery in the bag it keeps the bread fresher for longer so I tried," she wrote.

"Just finished the last slices off and the bread was fine and it was dated the 19th of April – so 10 days out of date."

Although the mum confessed she had no idea how the hack worked, it’s likely down to the fact that celery holds a lot of moisture, which the bread is able to absorb, keeping it fresh and preventing it from going stale and drying out.

Other members of the group were equally impressed and many promised to try out the celery hack themselves, in a bid to get their bread to last longer.

One wrote: "Wow, that is worth knowing – thank you."
