Mum seriously injured in 'gas explosion' as neighbour says 'back of house missing'

A terrifying 'gas explosion' woke neighbours in a quiet residential street in the early hours of yesterday morning.

One resident heard what she said sounded like a 'bomb going off' on the Bargeddie estate near Coatbridge.

The drama unfolded at 6.25am when a huge bang rocked the home of Scott and Donna Donnell in Cedar Grove.

The couple were home at the time, and rushed to hospital in the immediate aftermath, the Daily Record reports.

Scott, 43, was later released from University Hospital Monklands, but 39-year-old Donna was more seriously injured and later transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

It is understood their children were not at home.

Pictures from the scene show extensive damage to the back of the house.

One neighbour told the Daily Record: "There was a huge sudden bang in the estate.

"It was early in the morning so it was hard to tell where it came from, but it was really loud.

"The emergency response vehicles were on the scene quickly and you could tell it was serious.

"The whole back of the house was missing.

"It looked like a bomb had gone off.

"It was a miracle no one was killed and hopefully they will be okay.

"Their friends and neighbours in the estate have rallied round to offer to help in any way they can."

Police yesterday said: "A 39-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were taken to University Hospital Monklands.

"The man received treatment and has been discharged. The woman has been transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with serious injuries. Neighbouring properties have been evacuated as a precaution.

"Officers remain at the scene."
