A mum who chose a traditional name for her baby boy says people's dubious reactions make her think they hate her choice.
The woman says she chose a name that is not massively unusual, but is in the 'lower end of the top 100' most popular baby names.
However, the mum says she has begun to feel paranoid that hers is not a popular choice after seeing people's reactions when she tells them her baby's name is Clive-Gary.
Taking to Mumsnet she said: "When people have asked my baby’s name, most people say “ah that’s nice” etc.
"A few people have instead said “what made you choose that name?” Or “is there a reason for the name?”, or “is it a family name?” (Without also saying it’s nice).
"I really don’t mind if people don’t like it, but AIBU to think that a response like that means they don’t like the name?
"For context it’s a very normal name at the lower end of the top 100."
however after failing to reveal her baby's name Mumsnetters were quick to urge her to tell them what it was.
One said: "Unless you say what the name is.. we can't tell you!"
Another agreed: "Definitely need to know the name..."
"Go on, say the name. This thread is a little bit pointless without it. I think that the people you’re telling probably don’t like it but who cares…you do," said a third.
The mum responded: "I thought it wouldn’t bother me but now I’m a little upset at the thought that people don’t like baby Clive Gary’s name."
But others told her not to let other people's opinions bother her.
One said: "To be honest, we chose our children's names because we liked them, it never even occurred to me to think about what other people may think of them.
"There will be many things in life which 'others' may think differently about, it really doesn't matter what they think about you or yours. You will tie yourself in knots if you try to live your life like that."
While others admitted they reacted badly to bearing unusual baby names.
One said: "I'm always ready to say 'ah, it's lovely' without missing a beat. Although I admit to struggling when faced with a couple of 'old people' names that (to me) don't work at any age. But I got to choose my kids names without anyone commenting so I don't comment on others kids names."
Another said: "I'd ask more questions about a name that I actually liked. 'Its lovely' etc is my default answer for a name I'm either not fond of or don't care about at all."
