Mum says people can't say her baby's 'awful' name without laughing

A mum says she is distraught because her friends and family can't say her baby's name without laughing.

The woman says some of her nearest and dearest have even gone as far as to say her baby boy's name is 'awful', while others just refuse to say it and make up silly nicknames instead.

The mum has spoken to her husband about it but he thinks she is 'overreacting'.

Writing on Mumsnet, the woman revealed the child's name is Brian and asked for advice.

She said: "He’s 6 weeks old and friends and family seem unable to call him by his actual name.

"They make up stupid names for him “baby Bobo” for example, I’ve had people literally snigger when I say his name. Mother-in-law has outright told us it’s an awful name for a baby and she can’t say it without laughing.

"I’ve told [my husband] I’m getting to the point where I feel if people can’t call him by his name maybe they shouldn’t be seeing him?!

"He thinks this is an overreaction and that I’m being too dramatic. They are going to make him grow up hating his own name."

However some mumsnetters said the name was open to ridicule. One said: "In the nicest possible way, you surely knew what you were letting yourself in for when you named a baby Brian..?

"But it’s pretty normal to call babies by cutesy nicknames, even if they haven’t been called Brian."

Another commented: "I think Brian has unfortunately got a certain reputation that is impossible to shake, and am a little surprised you didn’t think of this beforehand.

"Do you not like any different names? You’re still in the window to change."

A third added: "Well, Brian was always going to be a controversial name for a baby. Personally, I really don’t like it.

"But for people, especially family, to say that out loud is incredibly rude. Cutesy nicknames are normal for babies though. My babies rarely heard their actual names for the first year of their lives.

"By the time he’s old enough to notice they’ll have got used to it. Little boy Brian is better than baby Brian."

However others agreed that her family and friends were being horrible.

One said: "Regardless of whether people like it, think it’s horrible, think it’s controversial or not, these people not calling him by his name are being rude!

"There are no two ways about it, it’s wrong and I would be seriously annoyed!

"You do not have to justify your name choice to anyone and you most certainly don’t have to change it!!!

"It’s pathetic really that grown men and women snigger at a child’s name. Really pathetic."
