Mum says four-year-old daughter was hit in the head and knocked off bike when passenger door of van, which was parked on pavement, was opened

A mum says her four-year-old daughter was hit in the head and knocked off her bike when the passenger door of a van - which was parked on the pavement - was opened.

Sophie Sveinsson, from Levenshulme, said she was walking her daughter, Oona, home from school on Thursday (September 24).

As Oona was riding her bike along the pavement on a street in Levenshulme, the passenger door of a van opened and hit her.

Sophie says her daughter was sent 'flying' into a wall.

Thankfully, Oona only suffered cuts and bruises.

"She’s a little bit shook up but she’s a brave little soldier,” Sophie told the Manchester Evening News .

"She only came off with some abrasions to her arm and her head was alright because she was wearing a helmet.

"She was back on the bike within a few hours.”

Sophie, who also has a two-year-old son, says she has noticed an increase in cars parking on pavements since schools returned.

“I didn’t realise how bad it really was until we started going back to school three-weeks-ago,” she added.

“The roads are dangerous due to the amount of cars parked in illegal places and zooming around heavily pedestrianised areas.

“The streets are ridiculous at the moment - there’s cars everywhere,” Sophie added.

“Loads of kids have learnt to ride their bikes during lockdown and there’s no reason why our children shouldn’t be allowed to ride their bikes safely on the path.

"Riding a bike is a life skill and should be encouraged, but I don't feel very comfortable encouraging my children to ride their bike on the roads in Levenshulme right now."
