Mum says daughter, 3, was rushed to hospital with breathing issues due to mouldy flat

A single mum says her anxiety is "through the roof" because her daughter was rushed to hospital with breathing problems, prompted by mould in their flat.

Samantha Jenkins, 33, says three-year-old McKenzie has been admitted to hospital twice this year.

The desperate mum says she has been begging Lambeth Council to sort the problem out.

McKenzie first stayed in hospital in February, after she began wheezing, and the hospital admitted her for low oxygen levels.

Prior to that the tot had no health problems before moving into the flat in July last year, however she has now developed asthma and was taken to hospital last week, reports My London.

Samantha said: "I’m here now just sat in fear because as it gets colder it’s going to get worse.

"It’s been terrible for my mental health, I have PTSD and now my anxiety is going through the roof as it gets colder, because I know it’s coming back and it’s going to affect all of our health.

"It’s already affected my daughter’s attendance because last year when she was ill if you had a cough there were Covid restrictions and she couldn’t go to school, that in turn affected my work because I’d have to stay home with her.

"If I could afford it I’d go private but I can’t just get a deposit out of nowhere and move.

"The council has an obligation to respect its tenants, it works both ways as a tenancy agreement, you would run me down for rent if I didn’t pay you but you’re not caring for the people paying for these houses."

Mckenzie was kept under observation for two days the second time she was in hospital due to her breathing difficulties.

Her mum said the problem is now so bad it has destroyed all the wallpaper in the south London flat and left puddles of water on her bedroom floor.

Samantha has a 5-year-old son Marnie who also lives in the flat, and said she first told the council about the issues in October 2021.

Since then, she has had just one visit from the council to fix the issue.

She said staff only wiped down the mould on the wall at the time, but did nothing to address the underlying rising damp problem.

Samantha confirmed Lambeth Council’s complaints team told her last Thursday they sympathised with her anger and they believe she will be entitled for compensation, but at this point she just wants the issue resolved.

A spokesperson for Lambeth Council said: "We apologise for any inconvenience Ms Jenkins and her family have experienced.

"In the meantime we have arranged a series of additional works, including a mould wash in the bedroom and bathroom, the installation of a humidistat extractor in the bathroom and a vent on a cupboard door, and a CCTV survey of the drains.

"Lambeth has more than 33,000 council homes and our priority is ensuring all of these are safe and well-maintained for our tenants.

"We have invested hundreds of millions of pounds in improving our council homes and estates in recent years, in line with the Lambeth Housing Standard."
