Mum's warning after piercing foot on large spike during night-time dog walk

A mum has given a stark warning to others after a spike tore through her foot piercing her skin during a night-time dog walk.

Sophie Jade Ellison, from Netherton, was walking her dog with her 12-year-old son on Wednesday.

She stepped on a large metal spike under a tree swing near an Activity Centre, and had to physically pull her foot free, Liverpool Echo reports.

She recalled: "I just went over with my son and dog to let him have a run around before bed. I was wearing slippers!

"It went straight through and the pain was unreal.

"I just don't understand how it's there, I take my dog there every day, my children play there every day, and I have never seen it before.

She said the pain was 'unreal' (UGC TMY)

"I tried to pull it out the ground but I couldn't.

"It was horrendous, one of the worst injuries I have ever had. Luckily I'm up to date with my tetanus jabs."

Sophie says her foot is now very sore after the injury near Netherton Activity Centre on Glover's Lane, and that walking on it is "extremely painful".

Sefton Council says the rope swing has now been removed and the area has been made safe.

Their spokeswoman said: "We’re sorry to hear of the incident near to the Netherton Activity Centre involving one of our residents.

“As soon as we were made aware, we deployed officers to survey the location. It is understood that a rope swing had been erected in the area by local residents which has now been removed in the interests of health and safety.

"Officers also checked the ground area for any further hazards and are satisfied that the area is now safe.

“Our communities can be assured that we take their wellbeing extremely seriously and would remind them that we have an array of managed and maintained leisure and recreation facilities available for their use right across the borough.”
