Mum's warning about why you should NEVER cover a pram in hot weather

As temperatures soar across the country it can be a battle to keep your little ones cool in the heat.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend , temperatures in Liverpool rose to a staggering - for the time of year - 24C, and many families took advantage of the good weather and headed to the beach.

But one mum has revealed why you should never cover a pushchair in hot weather.

Mothering Matters on Facebook said that covering the buggy may seem like a simple solution to protect your baby from the sun but this greatly increases your baby’s risk of heatstroke, dehydration and SIDS. (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)

The reduced airflow that covering the buggy causes means the temperature inside the buggy very quickly rises to dangerous levels.

One study found that the temperature inside a covered buggy in 22C heat rose to 34C within 30 minutes.

After an hour, the the heat rose dramatically to a sweltering 37C - dangerously hot for a young child.

And when covered, ventilation inside the pram is also largely reduced, limiting access to fresh air.

There are buggy shades available but the Lullaby Trust advises not using any of these covers either. Instead, a buggy parasol and appropriate loose light clothing to cover delicate skin are the best options, they say.
