Mum's torment as council rules severely autistic son, 4, must go to mainstream school

The mum of a severely autistic four-year-old says her son won’t be able to cope after a council ruled he must go to mainstream school.

Stephanie Ross, 31, thought her son Struan, four, would attend a specialist support unit near where they live in Glenrothes.

But Fife Council have told her he must attend a mainstream school – though he is non-verbal, not toilet trained and has to wear a nappy, and has learning support needs.

Single mum Stephanie said: “I’m sick with worry. I know he won’t cope.”

She believed a place in the school’s Rimbleton Primary School’s additional support class would be ideal for her son. But last month she was told Struan will be put in the mainstream part of the school in August.

Trans teenager finally follows his dreams after years of isolation on rural Scottish island

He will have daily outreach sessions to the unit as well as a part-time pupil support assistant with him.

Peter McNaughton, head of education and children’s services at Fife Council, said Stephanie’s appeal would be dealt with under due process.

He appreciated how important it was for parents to know as quickly as possible where their children would attend school.

The council's policy was to include and support children in mainstream education where possible as this was deemed best practice.
