Mum's shopping receipts reveal how she feeds family of four for just £43 a week

A thrifty mum has revealed how she keeps her entire family going for slightly more than £40 a week.

Cash conscious Kylie Gough caused a stir when she posted her shopping receipts on a popular savings forum earlier this week.

The resident of Adelaide, Australia flaunted a fortnightly shop that came to just $161.44 - the equivalent of £86 a fortnight or £43 a week.

Kylie is not just shopping for herself, however.

Impressively the resourceful mum stretches the trolley load into enough meals to fill the stomachs of her husband Adin, two children aged six and three, a cat and a dog.

According to Australian government figures the average couple with two kids forked out $336 a week on food and drink in 2016.

That means the Gough family are spending about four times less than the typical set up.

The shop was carried out at Australian supermarket Coles and saw Kylie bag up fruit including grapes, apples, tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers and banananas.

Lasagna sheets, popcorn, biscuits and breads were also put in to provide a bit of carby relief, with the bargain savvy shopper also finding room for tuna, kangaroo mince, cheese, milk and chicken.

While a lot of the items on the list were Coles own brand, the mum of two ensures no one goes wanting with a carefully worked out, delicious sounding meal plan.

An example week posted online featured meals such as spaghetti bolognese, sausage and vegetables, fish and chips, tacos, quiche with salad and schnitzel with vegetables.

Creamy chicken, mushroom pasta bake and beef burgers are included on the second week menu.

While planning ahead and being strict when it comes to picking up extras - short of $10/£5.40 spent on bread and milk - are the key parts of Kylie's frugal food schedule, she also buys in season vegetables which are usually cheaper.

A meat free day each week, buying in bulk and an eye for sale items also help to keep the check-out a shock free zone.

At home frozen vegetables are regularly added to meals, many of which are prepped in advance.

The family began budgeting two years ago when Kylie changed jobs.

“I took about a $100k pay cut when I moved jobs, so I had no choice but to make changes to the way I was spending,” she told news.com.au.

“I just tried to budget our life to suit the amount of money that was coming into it.

“I spend between $150 and $180 on groceries each week, depending on what is needed."
