Mum's rant about shoppers who get up early to queue for the January sales

A mum has demanded to know why shoppers bother queuing up on New Year's Day to grab bargains and has written an open letter to shoppers to address the issue.

The woman says she simply cannot understand why people would want to go to the shops so early and was curious to discover how much of a bargain shoppers really got.

She asked people on Mumsnet to tell her the reasons why people queue up for shop bargains, Hull Live reports.

"If you are one of those people waiting outside shops on Boxing Day at 6am (or earlier), why do you do it?" She said.

"The bargains can’t be that good. We visited friends in Liverpool and they showed me photos in the local paper of people queuing outside Next at 5.30am, outside Lush at 6am etc. Why????

"The paper had interviewed some of the queuers (is that a word?). Their reasons were as follows, woman outside Lush: 'the gift sets are 50% off so I can get £400 worth for £200!'

"Sorry love, they aren’t going to last until Christmas 2020. When I assume you will attempt to re-gift them.

How to get the most out of online sales

"Women outside Next: 'It’s a tradition for us and we come every year but we are trying to buy less because we are worried about the environment.' I wonder if Next sell self-awareness?

"Genuinely, why do you do it? Is it because you are trying to recreate the Blitz spirit? Is it so that you have something to talk about?"

Most of those who replied to the mum agreed with her, saying they can't understand it either.

What do you think?

One mum said: "If it was something really really expensive reduced to peanuts I might be tempted (I probably wouldn’t be - I’m quite lazy) but to save 15 quid in a Next jumper? I’d rather stay in bed."

Another said: "I don’t understand why they open at 6am, surely if they opened at ten they get the same if not more people there.

"Next sales are a strange affair, it’s all their stuff no one wanted in the first place."

Another said: "I don't understand either... unless it's something really special with a huge discount....and also don't see any appeal with Next...they buy in racks of cheap poor quality tat just for the sale from clearance warehouses...the nice items are never discounted!!"
