Mum's PMS so severe she feared she would lose her children

A mum-of-three has told how she was driven to the brink of suicide because of her severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Lisa Lane, from Merseyside suffered from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition whose symptoms are similar to PMS, but to a higher degree, and often having more serious psychological symptoms than physical ones.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast , Lisa revealed how her symptoms worsened after she suffered a miscarriage in 2016, reports the Daily Mail.

She said: "It's cost me friendships, relationships and family time. I thought about suicide ideation all the time, I had a plan.

"I used to plan it [killing myself] in my head all the time because I didn't think I was worthy of living or being with my children, having a family."

Initially when Lisa visited her GP, she was diagnosed with clinical depression, but when her GP reexamined her symptoms, she realised they coincided with her menstrual cycle and diagnosed her with PMDD.

Following the diagnosis, Lisa was able to undergo a hysterectomy.

She said: "Fortunately that plan [suicide] never came to fruit, I was lucky enough to get the support from my GP and a gynecologist who was knowledgeable in PMDD.

"It was an easy decision for me because I had done the treatment plan and it was the last straw - I had to do it to keep my family together."

Lisa believes that if she hadn't had a hysterectomy she would have been in a 'very dark place' and eventually would have 'lost her children'.

Speaking to the BBC's Jayne McCubbin, Lisa said: "Now I feel absolutely amazing. I've got my life back, the kids are no longer eating takeaway food, I'm no longer in my bed 24 hours a day crying. I'm happy."
