Mum shamed over 'budget' packed lunch for her kids - 'thrown it in the bin'

A mum who showed off her budget packed lunch idea that her kids love has been slammed by other parents who say she should "throw it in the bin".

Christa Spafford, from Lancashire, proudly shared a snap of her low-cost meal idea which consisted of a stack of scotch pancakes, a mini jar of honey, a sachet of Nutella and a separate box of mixed fruit.

She managed to keep costs down by shopping in budget stores like Aldi and B&M and was proud of her creation, but people quickly labelled it unhealthy.

She shared the suggestion to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group on Facebook, writing: "Packed lunch idea.

What do you think about it? (Getty Images)

"Pancakes Aldi - less than 60p. Fruit - less than 50p.

"Nutella - 2. 99 for 12 in B&M. Honey - 24 pots for 3.50 in my local bargain store."

Since being posted, the status has received 7,400 likes and more than 700 comments.

A number of mums found the sachets of Nutella really handy, and some even said they'd make the lunch for themselves or their partners.

One said: "I would take this to work sandwiches everyday gets boring fast."

Another added: "This would be perfect for my husband in work when he's doing a morning shift."

A third added: "Perfect for breakfast on the go."

But others were quick to criticise her, with one writing: "Any nutrition??"

Another said: "More like a dessert than a lunch. Looks unhealthy apart from fruit."

And: "That would be thrown in the bin! X very unhealthy" said a third.

A few people also pointed out that Nutella is banned from their children's schools due to nut allergies.

After numerous hateful comments Christa was forced to defend herself, writing: "Please note. You can do this without the nutella!

"My kids school is tiny and it's ok, but I understand most won't allow so of course no nutella.

"But as for the 'sugar' content the honey is natural sugars as are the fruit.

"Please remember it's just an idea am just trying to help others out."
