Mum's 'humiliating' row over Christmas turkey at Tesco's self service tills

A mum-of-five says she and her family were left humiliated after a nightmare trip to Tesco.

Claire Harrison has vowed to never step foot in the supermarket again after suffering embarrassment at the self-service tills.

The 31-year-old says she popped into to do some shopping with her husband, aunt and mum when things went horribly wrong.

They made their way round the store as normal before walking over to the self-service checkouts.

But after scanning all their food and paying, Claire claims staff raced over demanding they produce their receipts as proof of payment before leaving the shop in Plymouth.

"I felt so humiliated with all them customers in there," she said.

"I have been going there for the last eight years and I will never, ever step foot in there again.

"I am a 31-year-old mum with five kids, I ain't no criminal."

Explaining how the drama unfolded, she said: "It was me, my mum, husband and auntie. We got some shopping and went over to the self-service tills.

"My auntie was on one till, my husband on another and my mum on the next one over.

"My auntie bought her shopping, and paid for it, and my husband (who I was stood with) did the same.

"Then, one of the members of staff in the self-checkout area went over to my auntie and said; 'have you paid for that?' and she said, yes, I have."

"They went around our shopping bags, ripped the receipt out of my auntie's shopping bag. With my husband, they ripped the receipt straight out of his hand."

Claire claims the family had gone to Tesco in part so her mum could pick up a turkey ahead of Christmas Day.

She said the birds are 'overpriced' in Morrisons - where they're going for £30 each.

She said they snapped up a £20 turkey in Tesco, deciding against the slighter cheaper £16 one because it looked 'dented'.

"My mum, she paid for her stuff on her bank card and bought a turkey for Christmas separately," Claire said.

"They asked her for her receipt and she didn't know what she had done with it.

"She thought she might have left it in the shopping trolley. She found it and it was yanked out of her hand.

"There was no apology, nothing."

Claire says the checkout area was packed full of shoppers - but alleges that no-one else was confronted.

Shocked and enraged, Claire confronted staff before storming out with her family after proving they had actually paid.

"Why did they approach us and not anybody else?"

"I stood my ground," Claire said. "I wasn't having them treating my auntie, husband and mum like that.

"I said; 'who the hell do you think you are?'

"They intimidated and humiliated us in front of lots of other customers. I did get really angry, so did my auntie.

A Tesco spokeswoman said:  We are sorry to hear that Ms Harrison and her family were unhappy about their experience in the store.

"It is very common for our colleagues to carry out spot checks at self-service checkouts, particularly during busy lunch time periods, and we can confirm that the correct procedures were followed.”
