Mum's heartbreaking tribute to daughter, 6, killed by falling tree at school

Floral tributes have been left at the school where a six-year-old girl was hit and killed by a falling tree.

Ella Henderson was taken to hospital following the incident on Friday but died on Saturday morning.

Her heartbroken mother Vikki has already raised over £30,000 for the air ambulance charity who tried to save her.

Emergency services were called to Gosforth Park First School near Newcastle upon Tyne following the accident.

Paramedics took the schoolgirl to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by road with an air ambulance doctor on board, but despite their efforts she died the next morning.

Vikki - who is married to Ella’s dad Neil, with the couple sharing another daughter, Abi - is thought to have been celebrating her 40th birthday weekend.

The mother-of-two wrote on her Facebook page: "This is not a post I thought I’d be writing for my 40th but they got to Ella so quickly and helped her the best they could.

"I’m asking for donations to Great North Air Ambulance Service. I’ve chosen this charity because their mission means a lot to me, and I hope that you’ll consider contributing as a way of celebrating with me."

Great North Air Ambulance Service said it was "overwhelmed by the response to Vikki’s fundraiser".

A source told the Daily Express: "Vikki’s actions in setting up the page, and everyone’s generosity in supporting it, will mean other people can benefit from the care of our team.

"Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragedy."

School staff and pupils have been left "devastated" said head Leanne Lamb (Newcastle Chronicle)

Tributes have been flooding in from the community and the school’s headteacher, Leanne Lamb, said staff and pupils had been left “devastated”.

Ms Lamb said extra support is being provided for both staff and students.

She added: “Our entire school community has been shocked and devastated by the tragic news that one of our pupils passed away during the night, as a result of injuries suffered from a falling tree in the school grounds.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family and friends as they come to terms with this tragic loss.

“As a school and community, we will take the time to mourn and are putting in place extra support for the staff and pupils who are devastated by this incident.”

One message left at the school’s gates read: "Bright and beautiful flowers for a beautiful little girl. Our thoughts are with you all at this time."

Another said: "To our lovely Rainbow Ella. We will miss you so much, you and your lovely family are in our thoughts and prayers, from everyone at 1st Brunton Rainbows and 2nd Brunton Brownies."

Others have posted tributes online.

Fahina Khan said: “Sending love and prayers to you and your little family. I’m so sorry for your loss; cannot believe it. Will miss her little smiles in the morning school runs. Lots of love.”

Hannah Chapelhow posted: “Oh how we will miss seeing Ella with you on the school run.

“It feels like only yesterday she was in her pushchair but she blossomed into a beautiful independent little girl. Sending love to you all. xx”

An investigation has been launched by the Health and Safety Executive.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said on Saturday: “Our officers are continuing to support her family and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.”
