Mum's heartbreaking admission as she starts wearing makeup for the first time

A mother has gone viral after saying it is 'f***ing terrible' how people treat her now that she has started to wear make-up again.

From applying a smidge of lipstick to a sweep of mascara, many women might reach for the make-up bag before leaving for the day.

Lots of others can't be bothered and head outside after a basic application of moisturiser, and sunscreen if they live somewhere warm.

Either approach is fine - it's a personal decision - but one that has a bigger impact on our life than we may have known, according to one woman.

A mum went viral on Reddit after speaking about her experience of being treated differently once she started wearing make-up regularly - and her admission went viral.

Speaking bluntly, she titled her post: "It's f***ing terrible how people treat me now that I wear make-up."

Explaining her point, she elaborated: "They are really, really nice.

"As an almost forty frumpy mom with young children who spent over a decade involved with a sport where make up was incredible impractical, I have spent almost twenty years with a bare face save special occasions. I've never worn make up to work or the grocery store or the doctor's office.

"My new years resolution was to practice a little self care and start wearing the kind of basic make up that I wore as a young professional. Foundation. Natural eyeshadow. Mascara. That sort of thing. Ten to fifteen minutes to feel better about myself.

"What was meant to be a small bolster to my confidence has quickly turned into something much larger. I am somehow not invisible anymore. People talk to me, or at least acknowledge me rather than trying to run me over in the grocery store. Customer service staff are more friendly. My doctor takes me more seriously.

"It's been two and a half months and I'm pretty much convinced that people suck and also now I can't stop wearing it. I'm not ready to face that casual indifference again."

After sharing her experience, another woman wrote: "I remember in Uni I was working on a group project with 4 other guys and they wouldn't listen to my ideas and would constantly talk over me.

"I wasn't wearing makeup for the first few classes because I didn't have time. One morning, I had time so I did my makeup and my hair and went to class. We had our group meeting and all of a sudden, the guys are actually listening to me speak, being very nice, and not interrupting me. It was very eye opening!"

Another said: "I have absolutely experienced this with medical offices. I noticed that if I do full makeup and wear sharp professional clothes, that I am treated with more respect and not dismissed."

A third commented: "My mom has had to go to emergency many times over the years for her chronic conditions. She always despite feeling horrible, a few times afraid it could be a life endangering situation, sat down and did make up.

"She says it can save your life and I believe it."
