Mum's heartbreak after 'funny, and loyal' son took his own life

A heartbroken mum has spoken about the devastating loss of her "funny, adventurous" son, who took his own life.

Adam Rowbottom from Speke, sadly died on Saturday, April 17, in Skelmersdale.

The 27-year-old taxi driver was suffering with his mental health and had struggled with debt since he left home at 15.

He had recently been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and had lost his job with Jaguar Land Rover before his tragic death.

Adam's family is now hoping to help other men get the support they need by raising money for a new mental health hub in Walton.

To do this, Adam's sister Charlotte Rowbottom and her uncles, Craig and Michael Whitlock, will be going skydiving on September 13, with all money raised going to the organisation Inner Guru.

Paying tribute to Adam, mum Julie Whitlock described him as "an explorer" who loved being outside in nature.

She said: "He was an adventurer, he was funny but he didn't have an ego whatsoever. He was very creative and loyal.

"I think losing a child is one thing, but losing a child who's took his own life is just on another level.

"I think about him all the time and he found me in my dream the day before yesterday, and I heard his voice."

Julie said a similar thing happened a few weeks ago, when she 'spoke' to Adam in her dream.

She said: "He came to me in my dreams and said sorry to me and it was face to face; it was the most amazing thing.

"I woke up and it felt so real, I just sobbed and sobbed at the realisation that it wasn't real."

An inquest into Adam's death at Preston Coroner’s Court on August 20, heard how his mental health deteriorated when he was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving one week before he died.

Karley Hansen, who had been in a relationship with Adam since July 2020, said he had told her he suffered with mental health issues and had considered suicide.

The inquest heard Mr Rowbottom, who was a keen hiker and loved camping, was also devastated when he lost many of his belongings after he failed to keep up repayments on a storage unit.

Speaking to the ECHO after the inquest, Adam's sister Charlotte said losing her brother has been "the hardest thing I've ever had to go through."

Charlotte, 28, will be taking part in the fundraiser on September 13 by skydiving from a small aircraft at 15000ft.

All money raised will be given to charity Inner Guru, for its new mental health hub at Efik House in Walton.

The new hub will offer mental health support to men in the form of counselling, workshops, courses and alcohol and drugs support groups.

Charlotte said: "For us, all of the logistics of his death are finished now like the funeral, and we went to the inquest last week.

"It's now about how we can make the situation better for someone else.

"Adam was always very passionate about mental health, it was something he spoke about quite often, so I do think he'd be very proud to know that in his name we're doing stuff to possibly help other people."
